We (Gunter Demnig and his team) can produce and install approximately 600 STOLPERSTEINE per month. Our sculptor Michael Friedrichs-Friedländer and six other craftspeople continue to hand-stamp each letter into the brass, even after more than 30 years. Gunter Demnig still installs many STOLPERSTEINE himself. The exception are the so-called community installations (installations without the artist or his wife Katja Demnig), which can be carried out by our STOLPERSTEIN initiators in the respective cities where Gunter or Katja Demnig have already installed stones repeatedly.
Years ago, Gunter Demnig consciously decided on decelerated and continuous installations, as he wants to counteract the factory-like mass extermination of the Nazi era. Apart from that, it is of course important to us that the installations are well prepared and accompanied with dignity, because every Nazi victim deserves to be honored individually. The installations are not routine for any of us; each fate moves us and there should be time and space for all people on site to engage with this experience.
